My Jamboree Journey: Memories, Friendship and Skills for Life
Hi, my name’s Izzy Mewis. I’m part of the 20th Walsall Scout Group and I’ve been in Scouting since 2016. I first joined Scouts when I was 10 years old, some of my school friends wouldn’t stop talking about the amazing time they were having, and I wanted to try something new after being part of another youth group. Looking back now, I couldn’t be more grateful that I did, it’s taken me on adventures I never imagined.
Discovering the Jamboree
I first heard about the World Scout Jamboree from others in my group who had been lucky enough to attend the event in America in 2019. The way they spoke about it, the friends they made, the experiences they had made me curious. So when the chance came to apply for the 2023 Jamboree in South Korea, I knew I had to go for it.
When I found out I’d been selected to join Unit 90, I was both surprised and absolutely elated. The idea of travelling across the world, experiencing a brand-new culture, and being part of something so big was beyond exciting.
The Jamboree gave me memories for life, friendships across the world, and the confidence to lead.
My Hopes and Dreams
When I applied, my hopes for the Jamboree were simple but meaningful:
- To make new friends from all over the world
- To create lasting memories
- To experience independence in another country
I’m happy to say that I achieved all of those and so much more.
Memories That Will Stay With Me Forever
There are so many moments from the Jamboree that I’ll carry with me for life. Some of the highlights include:
- Trading badges with Scouts across the globe
- Visiting the Blue Presidential Palace and unexpectedly being chased by the media for a televised interview!
- A fun-filled day at Legoland
- Along with all the preparation along the way – our unit meet-ups and training camps, especially camping at Patshull and the trip to Go Ape at Cannock Chase
Those experiences weren’t just fun, they taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of teamwork.
What I Learned Along the Way
Being chosen as a Patrol Leader gave me the chance to develop my leadership skills and learn how to make quick decisions in challenging situations. The Jamboree also pushed me to adapt – whether to new cultures, climates, or unexpected changes.
On top of that, the fundraising journey taught me how to collaborate, communicate, and work hard for something I really believed in. These are skills I know I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.
Why You Should Apply
If you’re thinking about applying for the next World Scout Jamboree – do it. You’ll gain skills for life; the confidence to adapt to new situations, the chance to build lifelong friendships, and memories you’ll treasure forever.
It was one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences I’ve ever had, and I’ll always be proud to have been part of Unit 90 representing West Mercia Scouts in South Korea.
