My Jamboree Journey: Discovering Cultures, Challenges and Confidence
From fundraising to friendships, Gabby’s Jamboree story is one of resilience, leadership and unforgettable memories.
I’m Gabby Maher, a member of the 20th Walsall Scout Group, and I’ve been part of Scouts since February 2012. Over the years, I’ve been on countless camps, taken on challenges I never expected, and built friendships that have shaped who I am. But nothing compares to the adventure of attending the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea as part of Unit 90.

Finding Out About the Jamboree
Long before I applied, I’d heard stories from other members of my group who had gone to Jamborees in Japan and America. Their excitement was infectious. They spoke about fundraising, the people they’d met, and the life-changing experiences they’d had. It made me wonder, could I take on that challenge too?
Taking the Leap
When the opportunity came to apply for the 2023 Jamboree, I didn’t hesitate. I wanted to:
- Meet new people from all over the world
- Experience different cultures first-hand
- Push myself to do things I’d never done before
When I found out I had been selected, I was over the moon. Excited, nervous, but most of all ready for the adventure ahead.
Lessons Along the Way
Looking back, I realise the Jamboree journey isn’t just about the event itself, it’s about everything that leads up to it and everything you take home afterwards.
- As a Patrol Leader in Unit 90, I developed real leadership skills. Learning how to support and guide others.
- Through fundraising, I learnt resilience, determination, and how to work as a team to reach a goal.
- At the Jamboree itself, I discovered adaptability – facing challenges in a new environment thousands of miles from home.
These lessons will stay with me far beyond Scouts.
What I Learned Along the Way
Being chosen as a Patrol Leader gave me the chance to develop my leadership skills and learn how to make quick decisions in challenging situations. The Jamboree also pushed me to adapt – whether to new cultures, climates, or unexpected changes.
On top of that, the fundraising journey taught me how to collaborate, communicate, and work hard for something I really believed in. These are skills I know I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.
Memories I’ll Never Forget
Two moments stand out above all others. Wandering through the markets in Korea, surrounded by new sights, sounds, and smells, was unforgettable – a glimpse into everyday life so different to my own. And visiting the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), standing at the edge of history, was an experience that left me both humbled and inspired.
Why You Should Apply
The Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – but the skills and memories last forever.
If you’re even thinking about applying for the next Jamboree, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ll meet new people, explore new cultures, and discover strengths you didn’t know you had.
Even if you’re not selected, the process of applying is valuable. It gives you the chance to reflect on your journey so far and the goals you want to work towards.
For me, the Jamboree was everything I hoped it would be and more. It truly is an opportunity worth grabbing with both hands.
